Cyprus, November 2004 |
On Sunday November 20th, we flew to Cyprus for David to present seminars on his latest theories.
David talks about his three worlds of mathematics ... |
... to an audience of staff and graduate students at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia (Lefkosia). |
... with Demetra Pitta-Pantazi, who is a lecturer at the university and a former doctoral student from Warwick. |
Theodosis Zachariadis relaxes in a break in the session. |
Costas Christou in deep in thought. |
Relaxing afterwards, Demetra helps Sue with the menu. |
On Wednesday, Sue hires a car and drives David south from Nicosia... |
... to the Mediterranean Sea ... |
... and on to Larnaca. |
... where they find British tourists are made at home. |
A drive along the sea-front at Larnaca ... |
... along the coast-road to Limassol. |
late afternoon ... |
... approaching Limassol. |
... returning along the motorway to Nicosia (Lefkosia) following familiar British-style road signs ... |
... driving on the left. |
Thursday brings research consultation with Theodosis Zachariadis. |
... |
... and discussion with George Philippou ... |
... and both Demetra and George. |
Back at the Hilton, we found what true service was ... |
... the apple that David had taken from the breakfast buffet for a later snack had been given special attention by the maid, placing it on a plate with a napkin and knife. |
Friday begins with a consulation with Athanassios Gagatsis ... |
In the afternoon Sue and David plan a trip to the mountains near Troodos; the weather looks ominous... |
As we approach the mountains, the rain turns to hail. |
There is a respite in the weather as we reach Galata ... |
... but it begins to snow more heavily ... |
... so we stop for some lunch ... |
... and to warm by the stove with the locals. |
After lunch, it has brightened up and things look more promising. We decide to press on to Troodos, which is only a few kilometres away. |
Somehow, sandals which work in Larnaca are not quite the gear up here. |
... and the snow gets deeper as we rise higher. We decide discretion is the better part of valour and turn back. |
The trip down the mountain through the snow ... |
... soon returns us to the sunny weather at lower altitude. |
... to spend the evening with Demetra, her daughter Christia ... |
her son Socrates and husband Efthemios. |
