The main academic purpose for the visit to Rio was to give the main plenary lecture for the First Workshop in History and Technology in the Teaching of Mathematics at the Univerdade do Estado do Rio De Janiero, February 21-23, 2002.


David formulates the role of embodied, proceptual and axiomatic modes of representation in his Plenary Lecture on
Using Technology to Support an Embodied Approach to Learning Concepts in Mathematics.

The symbolism of limit as process and concept in the proceptual mode.

Visualising the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in the embodied mode in a manner which gives a proof of the theorem in the axiomatic mode.
