Soon after arriving in Taiwan, we went off for a few days holiday with Abe and Grace at Hualien on the east Pacific coast. Returning to Taipei, we had to wait a few days waiting for the air-conditioning to be installed in our flat. We spent the time at the Howard hotel, where we took the opportunity to share a meal that had been kindly donated to us by our good friend Ron Penix. The full story of this saga is too long to tell here. Suffice it to say, Thank you Ron!

After a week at the Howard Hotel, we moved into our flat in Shida Road, a busy area near the main campus of the National Normal University, with many shops, a night market and lots of restaurants at prices suitable for students.

Our flat in Shida Rd is on the corner, one floor above road-level.

Our balcony with its outdoor washing machine. Click here to see a panorama to the right of this view.

The flat is large inside. This is half the living room on the day we arrived.

... and this is the other half.

The kitchen (looking out to Shida Rd).

The engine room, where the brain work is done ...
... and half of the bedroom.

Shida Rd on a quiet Sunday afternoon. A hundred yards down this road and turn left for the RMT (Rapid Mass Transport).
Sue uses the ticket machine in the underground to get a ticket to the end of the line (Tamshui, by the sea!)
It is really quite easy. Find the station, 1: press the button for the price.
2: put the money in the slot (change is given). 3: get the ticket.

On the way back to the centre.

In the middle of Taipei, there are still areas used for cultivation owned by the locals.

This lady tends her vegetables in the shadow of a skyscraper. Perhaps tomorrow this land will be sold for building and the owner will be rich!

Yes, I did eventually see Harry Potter II in English with Chinese subtitles.

Back at Shida Road.
