On a lazy family day, we were invited to have prawns for lunch. However, first we had to catch them! This is at an establishment run by an ex-Chef who found it more sporting to put his prawns and crabs into large rectangular pools for his customers to catch. Grace’s brother Bing-Wen is an expert so he catches several times as many as any one else in the time limit. However, anyone can have a go, and we did...

Fishing in Hualien is a bit different from fishing in England ...

Bing-Wen catches a prawn. (They are green when alive and go pink when cooked...)

David has a go ....

... and catches a medium-sized one.

Sue concentrates ....

.... and catches a whopper – just look at its pincers (the long things sticking out either side of the middle of the body...)

Abe removes the hook.

... and David holds it by its pincers (about a foot long!)

Even Chen-En has a go ...

... and catches one.

Abe admires the morning catch.

... which now provides us with lunch....

The whole family eat heartily.

Now we see the value of a chef as the proprieter .... The food is delicious!

The mustard is hot...

... to everyone’s amusement.

Now down town to the Hualien Stone Sculpture Festival.

It has a major top-spinning competition for the children ...
Amy and David pose outside the Hualien County Stone Sculptural Museum.
Inside we are serenaded by a local artist playing ‘Amazing Grace’ on the harmonica.

Then she paints a picture of a lily for Sue. (Remember that ‘Susan’ means ‘fair white lily’.)

.... and Sue is presented with the painting.

We visit sculptures in the country ...

and local christian graves ...

The sea-shore north of Hualien.

Grace and Sue.

Mad dogs and Englishmen ...

... paddle with the natives.

without allowing for big waves (see David’s legs vanish beneath the water ...

... and get somewhat wet ...
